Wood consumption in cold climates can be 1 or 2 cords burned in fireplaces for supplemental heat or 3 or more cords for fireplaces used as a primary heater for an entire home over a heating season. Wood consumption is directly proportional to the temperature outside, the size of the home being heated, its insulation value and the amount of time that the fireplace is in operation. If you have even a small wood lot, you can manage it to supply your heating needs, a comforting thought, that in this time of high energy costs and uncertain availability, you can grow your own heat!
